Diaosu, Dundee

Our support

We have provided three years of support to Diaosu, a community art company in Dundee, for their youth programme aimed at 16-24 year olds in the city.

We classified this support as a social enterprise award. For more on our interest in "social enterprise", see this page.

Background to our partner (see also here)

Diaosu is a company limited by guarantee, and works to promote equality and diversity and encourage creativity. They offer community and artist opportunities, event photography, children’s craft parties/workshops and access to art resources, including a darkroom.

In 2012-2013, the youth programme provided sessions to build skills and self confidence, using facilities such as a darkroom and a pottery kiln. This enabled young people to create artwork that they can showcase in Diaosu's exhibition space to friends, family and the wider world. In 2013-2014, our support was largely used for a photography project.

Outcomes and lessons

Update Spring 2013

From May 2012 to early 2013, Diaosu drew on our support for a wide range of activities, including :

  • assisting a young person to attend oil painting and photography classes

  • helping with their rent and other business costs

  • the purchase of a wide variety of art supplies and office equipment

These purchases brought in additional income both to Diaosu as a social enterprise, and to several of the young people they support.

Diaosu noted that many of the young people who have made contact with them "have been at a point of crisis in their lives", and that working on these art projects built self-confidence. Diaosu added, "it was empowering for them to seek their own solution to their needs".

Other updates on the work of Diaosu can be found on their website here. They have been busy !

Everyone involved with Diaosu is to be congratulated for their excellent progress in the last year.

Update July 2013

Having been very impressed with Diaosu's achievements to date, in July 2013 we provided additional support for a new photography project.

Update July 2014

From July 2013 to June 2014, Diaosu drew on our support to run a photography project, forming part of their community engagement and providing a structure for young people who drop by and ask for opportunities. This including working with other local partners in Dundee such as The Helm, The Haven, Change Makers, and Signpost International. Some 80 young people were involved, using single use, pin-hole and digital cameras. Outcomes included a project called 'What Could Be Here', aimed at imagining a future for the derelict space on Alexander Street (for more on this, see here).

In addition, Diaosu have supported several young people on work experience in “upcycling” old furniture, and helped others at the additional support unit at St John's Secondary School.

Other updates on the work of Diaosu can be found on their website here. They have had another busy year !

Everyone involved with Diaosu is to be congratulated for their excellent progress in the last year.

Update November 2014

As we continue to be very impressed with Diaosu's achievements to date, in November 2014 we provided additional support for their work.

Update April 2016

From late 2014 to early 2016, Diaosu drew on our support for a wide range of activities, focused on their community engagement strategy, including :

  • running several craft workshops in Dundee's Overgate Shopping Centre, for around 80 children

  • providing creative space for the Aperture Project, a group of young people set a project to develop their photographic skills. Some 10 young people and five families took part in a family photographic shoot and two exhibitions

  • developing a craft resource for people living in sheltered accommodation

  • other business development activity with other social enterprises and the private sector in Dundee

Everyone involved with Diaosu is to be congratulated for their superb further progress in the last year.

Update May 2016

We made a small additional award to Diaosu as part of our final award package.
